Three upcoming events this week righ here in Sumner neighborhood. Three great ways to get informed, be involved, and meet your friendly neighbors!

Saturday, March 26 — Sumner Pride litter patrol. 10AM at Central Northeast Neighbors (CNN), side door of Fire Station #12 at 4415 NE 87th Ave, between Sandy and Prescott. Sponsored by the Sumner Association of Neighbors (SAN) and Central Northeast Neighbors (CNN).

We furnish the gloves, garbage bags and litter picker tools, you provide an hour or two of your time to help beautify our little piece of Portland. It’s easy, it’s very low cost instant gratification, and it works great for making our neighborhood look and feel better.

For more information, see the Sandy Blvd repaving project on the Portland Bureau of Transportation website.

The November meeting of the Sumner Association of Neighbors (SAN) recapped some recent events, discussed emergency preparedness, set the new calendar for 2011, and announced the new name of the litter patrol.

Without a guest speaker this month, our meeting was less focused that other months. Which is good, considering the looming holidays. Here’s a summary of the agenda items discussed:

Neighborhood Emergency Team: Eugene (our chair) spoke about the NET program and how they offer seven-week training that improves emergency preparedness.

Halloween party recap: Our 37th annual neighborhood Halloween party was a success again this year. Thanks to our awesome volunteers, Helensview High School, and our friends at Broadway Cab for donating a mountain of great prizes!

Spirit of Portland award recap: We passed around our brand new 2010 Spirit of Portland award in the ‘neighborhood association’ category, a chunk of shiny glass. Eugene recounted his post-award revelling at a local karaoke bar. For more details, see Eugene Muir accepts the Spirit of Portland award for SAN.

Proposed biogas facility: A DEQ hearing was set for on Thur, Nov 18. The proposed biogas site is on Columbia Blvd at around 69th. You can provide comments to DEQ until Nov 29. For more details, see DEQ sets Nov 18 hearing.

2011 calendar: The 2011 Sumner neighborhood calendar of events was discussed, approved, and is now posted. It is modelled closely on this year’s calendar. All the popular events were included:

  • Annual Cleanup on Saturday, May 15
  • Neighborhood garage sale on Saturday, June 4
  • Neighborhood barbecue on Tuesday, August 2
  • Halloween party on Friday, October 28

New name for the litter patrol: The neighborhood group has met the last Saturday every month from March to October. We averaged 4-6 people per month and picked up an average of 25-40 pounds of litter per person per month. We called it the “litter patrol” all year, but that’s all over now. The people have spoken, per this online poll, and a new name is SUMNER PRIDE. A pair of Trailblazer tickets — for Dec 7 versus Phoenix — were awarded to one of the online survey participants.
