newsletter thumbnail The newsletter for spring 2012 (1.5 MB PDF) for Sumner Association of Neighbors (SAN) in NE Portland, Oregon, is now available online!

This issue is partially delivered around the neighborhood by now. It includes almost nothing you’ve seen (yet) on this website.

Items include:

  • Redistricting and the May 15 primary election. Don’t forget to vote! Drop off your completed ballot at Gregory Heights Library by 8 PM.
  • Neighborhood cleanup on Saturday, May 19. Details here.
  • Garage sale on June 2: Details here and online signup form here.
  • Updates on litter patrol and the SAN lot
  • Updates on the community garden at Helensview School. (More big news coming very soon!)
  • Notes from February, March and April meetings
  • Plans to upgrade of the city-owned pump station next to the Grotto.

Our monthly neighborhood meeting is Tuesday, May 15. We’ll have the preliminary community garden design on hand, and we’ll gather your comments and suggestions about the layout. We might have our neighborhood response police officer as a guest speaker. He is currently unconfirmed.

As a special attraction, instead of our usual ‘light refreshments’ during social time at 6:30 PM, this month we’ll serve pizza and salad. Meeting is at the usual location: CNN conference room, 4415 NE 87th (aka side door of Fire Station #12, just north off Sandy Blvd).

The third annual Sumner Association of Neighbors garage sale is set for Saturday, June 2.

Want to participate? Just go to our online form and sign up.

We’re asking for a $2 suggested donation to cover the cost of printing flyers. Last year we had about 10 houses join in…though we saw other families set their items out too.

Don’t let the $2 stop you from signing up! This is a neighborhood event that you — our neighbors — asked SAN to sponsor. So please do sign up if have any stuff you want to sell.

And don’t forget: Bring yard debris — the kind of stuff you won’t sell — to the annual Neighborhood Cleanup on Saturday, May 19 between 9 AM and 3 PM at Helensview School, 8678 NE Sumner St.

We have three guest speakers for the meeting this Tuesday evening (March 20) of the Sumner Association of Neighbors (SAN) in NE Portland. We will be joined by State Representative Mary Nolan and local business owner Bruce Altizer, who are candidates for Portland City Council, Position #1.

In a late addition, incumbent Position #1 City Commissioner Amanda Fritz, who is seeking re-election, but had a prior engagement on this date will join us during the pre-meeting social time (which starts at 6:30 PM) and the very first part of the meeting until 7:15 PM.

A fourth candidate for Position #1, Teressa Raiford, was also invited to attend.

The meeting starts at 7 PM in the CNN conference room, 4415 NE 87th Ave (map). Social time (with light refreshments) starts at 6:30 PM.

Other topics include:

  • Two volunteers needed for an ad hoc ‘blue ribbon’ committee we’re seating to review and propose revisions to our bylaws (287K PDF file)
  • Updates about litter patrol, graffiti grant, WTS, community garden, SAN lot ‘adopt a highway,’ Sandy sidewalk project. In other words, all your favorites.
  • Upcoming events: Litter patrol on March 31; Newsletters in late April; Neighborhood Clean-up on Saturday, May 19, at Helensview; Neighborhood garage sale on Saturday, June 2 (sign up now); SAN board elections (no date set)
  • Your ideas and suggestions

And don’t forget: Saturday, March 31: Sumner Pride litter patrol, 10 AM at the CNN office. Everyone is invited! We had a great turnout on Feb 24 despite the iffy weather.

Shh! Don’t tell anyone, but there is a secret garden sale going on this weekend in Sumner neighborhood of NE Portland at 8321 NE Going Street.

garden sale 1

Our neighbor, Kimberlee, has had some health issues, and so she is selling some of her collection of vintage items. Stuff arrayed in her parklike backyard include art items, clocks, kitchenware, jewelry and greeting cards. It looks like part of the Hollywood Antique Mall back there.

She also has clothes, books, video games, CDs and DVDs, Star Wars memorabilia, and more. She has a lot of stuff back there and most of it is not typical yard sale stuff.

The sale will open 10 AM to 6 PM this weekend today (Friday) through Sunday. Weather permitting, the sale will also be open on following weekends at similar hours.

Here’s a few more photos.
